Tasty Morsels of EM 029 – Globe Rupture

5 Aug

I keep a little, ever-expanding note on my phone where I jot down little morsels of goodness that I pick up while listening to or reading one of the many excellent sites/podcasts in the useful resource section. They’re useful in a kind of “board review” way. I tend to skip the really basic stuff and try and focus on what I didn’t know.

I’ll try and transfer them here for your enlightenment.

Globe Rupture

  • Can be penetrating or secondary to a blow and sudden rise in pressure
  • commonest at site of insertion of intra ocular muscles or limbus
  • if at the limbus then an oval pupil can be seen and sometimes even prolapse of the ant chamber contents
  • think bloody chemosis. If 360 sub conjunctival bleed then think globe rupture
  • CT helpful but simply not sensitive enough
